The Parade

March 29, 2015 Beidi Guo

Some details of drawing below

Logically speaking, able to dream every night should be an absolute terrifying experience for human being, because you can vividly experience all sorts of random crazy stuff: chased by monster, killing people or been killed, cat exploded, the whole world comes to its end etc. Day after day without being able to choose the content, we dreamed, like playing a Russian roulette. But no one seems too worried about that, simply because we know that we will awake up eventually.

In the other hand, people do quite scared about death. Then I thought ,what if our life is just a very long dream ,and being died is to be finally awake? Won't it be a wonderful thing? Because according to my own experience, if I had a bad dream I would feel relief after woke up; and if I had a good dream, the relax sensation and joyful memory of that dream could cheer me up for a whole day. No matter what, it would've been a win win situation.

So let's not too worried about the big ending, just like no one ever worried about what happened before birth. Let's linger in the dream life for a little more while, experience all sorts of stuff, enjoy the life enjoy the dream.

The illustration above is the latest work of mine, I don't know what to name it. I picture dream and death are two very similar thing, should welcome them like attending a big parade. Although the image is a little bit cult and creepy, but aren't all the unknown stuff in the world just like that ? Creepy, but exciting.

Calligraphy Practice

2015-03-14 14.jpg

Since I was a kid, my hand writing had never been great and my Chinese calligraphy is just beyond rescue. Although I am always admire those who writes beautifully but I never thought to get practicing again.

Until recently I discovered calligraphist Lindsey Bugbee's blog ,her fabulous works had inspired me so much, god I wish I could write like that! So follow by Lindsey's extremely helpful tutorial for beginners, after weeks practice I finally starting to get hold of the writing rhythm a bit.

And here is my first attempt to write some sentences.
It was an untitled poem I found on the internet, author unknown. The image above was a fabulous printmaking work by artist Thomas Sara. I was deeply moved by both of them and I feel somehow they are just perfect to go along with each other. I hope it will keep reminding me the deep connection between life and death, that we should live life without regrets and in the end greeting the death like an old friend.

Dreamcatcher Illustration Tutorial

Recently I made an American Indian's dreamcatcher, which also called the Ojibwe dreamcatcher.

According to the Ojibwe tribe's ancient legend, there was this Spider Woman, known as Asibikaashi. She took care of the children and the people on the land. Eventually, the Ojibwe Nation spread to the corners of North America and it became difficult for Asibikaashi to reach all the children. So the mothers and grandmothers would weave magical webs for the children, using willow hoops and sinew, or cordage made from plants. The dreamcatchers would filter out all bad dreams and only allow good thoughts to enter our mind. Once the sun rises, all bad dreams just disappear.

How was that sounds like? Very cool indeed. I simply love all the ancient culture's legend and stories, however more and more of them is getting lose during the time, I'd love to learn all of them and pass on to the next generation. In the end of the day ,that's what make us who we are now.

Although I was thinking to buy one dreamcatcher for a long time (as my dream plays a huge part of my life), after some research and drawing, I decided to make one by myself. And since I've already done one illustration tutorial about how to make a tipi tent for pets , I thought I should make one for the dreamcatcher too.

Good Night and sweet dreams!  (:3[____]

a boy and his friend

bookshop

I went to visit one of my friend in north London last weekend, the weather was lovely so we decided to take a walk around the town center.

As we walked past a bookshop around the corner, I suddenly saw something extraordinary. Inside the book shop by the display window , side by side stood a little boy and his friend, a little wolf! They were reading a picture book together, the little wolf was constantly pointing at the page and talking to the boy, seems quite exciting about the content.

I was shocked and thought "OMG, this can't be real!" but just few seconds later I realized the little wolf was another little kid wearing a wolf hat. Because he was putting his head down, so from my perspective all I can see was a standing living little wolf.

I have to admit that I was a little bit disappointed when I found out about my illusion ,but this adorable scene still made my day. I decide to draw an illustration about it. It was indeed a magical moment in our boring adult life, which reminds me all the dreams and fantasies I had when I was a kid, finally it came true, I am more than blessed to witness it, even it just last for a few second.
